Favorite scripture and why: I know it is pretty broad, but I would have to say the entire Gospel of Mark. In my Bible class junior year at Our Lady of Peace, we spent about two weeks of class time, just reading and analyzing Mark in its entirety. I had never read a gospel beginning to end before that. Probably the most important thing that I took from that experience was learning how to read the Bible in context and how to apply it to my life now. Also, I came to realize, that while the Gospels were divinely inspired, they are also very human, as evidenced by common literary and rhetorical techniques present throughout the text. Reading Mark also solidified my decision to major in religion in college.
Favorite part of Core Team: Spending time with fantastic people who share my faith in God, and who are passionate about doing good in the world.
What does your faith mean to you: My faith is something that no one can take from me, something that I hold in my heart. At the same time though, my faith is communal, not full until shared with others.
Most influential person in your faith: Pat Clasby
If you could ask God one question, what would it be: I have plenty of questions, but I don’t think that I want any answers right now. Life is a journey, and I think that an answer to any question that I ask of God can only come to make sense through experiencing what it is to be human.
If you could leave a message to the high school students after you, what would it be: Don’t waste your time or energy trying to please other people just for the sake of pleasing other people. Ultimately, you only have to answer to yourself and to God.
